Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. – I Pet. 2:5

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together... Ecc. 3:5a

Israel is likened unto Living Stones, 12 Stones have been GATHERED and used to form memorials (Josh. 4) and altars (I Kings 18) representing Israel. Deut. 27-28 speaks of these 12 Tribes (Stones) being SCATTERED due to disobedience. The Temple was the symbolic embodiment of Israel and Yeshua said not one stone of the Temple would be left standing upon another. They would be SCATTERED (Matt. 24:2). Only upon Israel’s collective repentance would these stones be GATHERED again and the Temple rebuilt. When the Tribes are REGATHERED again, 12 Stones will be laid once again (Rev. 21:14).

How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray. Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish. – Matt. 18:12-14

Yeshua left the 99 to save the 1.

But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel… But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. – Matt. 10:6, 15:24

Yeshua was called to the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel.

The 99 represents Judah, the Jews Yeshua and his Talmidim (Disciples) were surrounded by and among. The 1 Sheep Yeshua and His Talmidim left to go save represents forgotten and assimilated Israel, the remaining 10 Tribes.

Israel was likened to sheep (Psa. 23, Isa. 53:6, Jer. 50:6, 17) who would be SCATTERED. The 12 Apostles too were called sheep, Yeshua being the Shepherd (Jn. 10:11, 14, Mat. 10:16, Mk. 14:27) and the Apostles/Sheep were SCATTERED. The Sheep (Apostles) were REGATHERED in the Upper Room (Matt. 20:19-29, Acts 1-2) because their purpose was to go and GATHER together the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel (Matt. 10:6, 15:24, Jn. 10;16, 21:15-17).

And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. – John 10:16

He “SCATTERED” the 12 and the 70 (Lk. 9:1-6, 10:1-12) to REGATHER the Lost Sheep of the Other Fold of the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel. To GATHER and reunite Judah and Israel (Ezk. 37).

After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Moses was sending 12 spies from each Tribe to see if the Land of Promise which the Canaanite nations (symbolizing the 70 Gentile Nations) occupied was ripe for the taking as the fruit of the land was ripe for the taking. The 12 Disciples were sent to see if the “Lost Sheep of the House of Israel (Matt. 10:6, 15:24),” the 12 Tribes scattered abroad and occupied Gentile lands (James 1:1) were ripe for harvest. Just as the 12 spies were to live off the land, pack light and only take what was necessary, so too the 12 Disciples were commanded by Yeshua to only take the minimal amount of supplies and live off the people of the Land.  

Moses sent out the 12 likely two by two to fulfill the Torah’s requirement “by two or more witnesses (Deut. 17:6, 19:15, Matt. 18:16, I Cor. 13:1)” regarding the establishment of truth regarding any single thing; because Caleb and Joshua came back with a good report and the 10 (symbolizing the Lost 10 Tribes) paired and came back with an “evil” report. In similar fashion the 12 and the 70 were sent out in pairs also. The pairing, besides establishing a reliable witness and safety may also have symbolized that Israel is divided into two Kingdoms; Judah and Israel. The 70, also sent to the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel may have been symbolic of sending 70 in search for the Tribes that have assimilated among the 70 Nations and act as Gentiles.

Joshua and Caleb to their mission in and sent their “shalom (peace)” out into the Land and thus they returned with a good report. The remaining 10 went in fear and not peace and thus came back with a bad report. Likewise, Yeshua told the 12 and 70 to allow their “shalom” to rest upon wherever they went. I see the shalom returning to the Disciples, and thus the result of the shaking off the dust of their feet as they leave a place, symbolic of a bad report of the 10 spies.

The Tribes were called to redeem and deliver the Land and the Disciples were called to redeem and deliver the People of the Land.

Once again we cannot escape nor sever the tie and the connection between the 12 Tribes and the 12 Apostles.

And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle. – Exd. 12:38

We have already established that there are 12 Tribes which Correspond to the 12 Apostles, we have also learned that besides Yeshua’s 12 Disciples/Apostles he had 70 other Disciples/Apostles (Luke 10:1). We have also learned that the 70 Disciples/Apostles correspond to the 70 Nations of the World. If the 12 Apostles would sit and rule and judge the 12 Tribes it stands to reason that the 70 Apostles would rule and judge the 70 Nations. After all, the 70 Elders Moses appointed also represent judges and rules over the mixed multitude that came up with Israel out of Egypt whom the Rabbis and Sages say that at least one representative of all the 70 Nations of the World were represented in that mixed multitude that came out of Egypt with Israel and also accepted the Torah with them when the Law was given at Mount Sinai. These 70 Elders would eventually become the 70 that sat on the Sanhedrin in Yeshua’s day.

Also it is worth noting that during Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles) 70 bulls were sacrificed on behalf of the 70 Nations.

“Regretfully, many in the Christian churches tend to dismiss this celebration as "just another Jewish holiday." This day is a day in which there were sacrifice offerings in the Temple for each of the Gentile nations. According to the Rabbis, there were 70 Gentile nations in ancient times. Beginning in Numbers 29:13, you can read about the sacrifices that were offered on each of the days of Sukkot. On the first day, 13 bullocks were offered as a burnt offering. On the second day, 12 bullocks, on the third day, 11 bullocks, until finally on the seventh day, only 7 bullocks were offered, making a total of 70 bullocks-one for each of the Gentile nations.” – Rick Aharon Chaimberlin, Litt. Now can the Jacobic and Mosaic prophecies regarding the Tribes and the personalities and position Apostles with regard to Yeshua indicate reasons for the possible pairing of Tribe with Apostle?

Gen. 49 and Deut. 33

·       Reuben – Unstable as water – Would survive and be many

·       Simeon – Would be scattered – No Mosaic prophecy given

·       Levi – Would be scattered – Would be mediator between God and the People

·       Judah – Would be many, victorious and would rule – The Tribes would be brought to him by their enemies

·       Zebulun – Would be a seamen – Would always be on the go abroad

·       Issachar – Would carry burdens – Would always tend to stay at home

·       Dan – Would be a judge – Would be like a lion cub

·       Gad – Would be a victorious troop in the end – Will be like a lion of victory, justice and expansion of territory

·       Asher – Would cater to royalty – Would be well liked and somewhat pampered

·       Naphtali – Would possess good oratory skills - Would have favor and possess the west and south

·       Joseph – Would be fruitful and multiply – Would have the blessings of the produce of the earth and of the flocks and herds and would cause others to be pushed out of their lands

·       Ephraim – Would be fruitful and multiply - Would have the blessings of the produce of the earth and of the flocks and herds and would cause others to be pushed out of their lands

·       Manasseh – Would be fruitful and multiply - Would have the blessings of the produce of the earth and of the flocks and herds and would cause others to be pushed out of their lands

·       Benjamin – Would be like a victorious wolf – Will have divine protection by the LORD

The Apostolic temperaments:

·       Simon Peter – Thought with his heart moreso than his head. Often got his foot stuck in his mouth. Rough around the edges

·       Andrew – Was rough around the edges like this brother Peter and was a hard worker, yet inquisitive (Mark 13)

·       James son of Zebedee – Was most likely passionate and fervent and was not called Sons of Thunder for nothing

·       John son of Zebedee – Was most likely passionate and fervent and was not called Sons of Thunder for nothing

·       Phillip – (Acts 8) A teacher, obedient, tolerant of other peoples and cultures

·       Bartholomew/Nathanial – (John 1:47) A true Israelite and guileless 

·       Thomas – Know for skepticism or we can say a critical and analytical mind

·       Matthew Levi – Was likely very tolerant and politically and business minded

·       James son of Alpheus – No much is known, but likely the opposite of his twin, laid back and easy going introvert

·       Judah/Thaddeus/Lebbaeus – By the names, was likely an extrovert, very outspoken, brave, passionate and compassionate

·       Simon the Zealot of Canaan – The name says it all, He was zealous, a “wanna conquer it all” kind of guy

·       Matthias – Likely humble, likely the opposite of Judas Iscariot

·       Saul/Paul – “Tough Love” may best describe Saul/Paul. He had top Hebrew education under the Famous Gamaliel and was well versed in Greek and Roman poets and philosophers and thus best suited to reach Jew and Gentile.

If we assume Yeshua chose 12 Apostles to be sent to the 12 Tribes, can we assume their order in Scripture can relate to the order of Israel’s encampment or marching orders. I will pair them by both methods. Let us also see if the Apostolic temperaments match the Tribes:

·       Simon Peter – Judah (Indeed he was considered the Apostle to the Jews and Paul the Apostle to the Gentiles) - Jews are passionate and stiff-necked and were known for reacting with their heart before their head.

·       Andrew – Issachar – Both were deemed hard workers

·       James son of Zebedee – Zebulun – Being like Thunder, thunder travels as Zebulun did by sea

·       John son of Zebedee – Dan and Reuben – Being a son of thunder has judgmental implications and haste which would produce a type of instability

·       Phillip – Asher and Simeon – Phillip being very accepting of others was called to deal with tribes of personas on both ends of the spectrum

·       Bartholomew/Nathanial – Naphtali and Gad – Both tribes have a trait of wanting a straight word and Nathaniel could deliver

·       Thomas – Benjamin and Ephraim – Benjamin being small and Ephraim being large you would need such an analytic person do wisely deal with the Napoleon complex of one and the big head of the other

·       Matthew Levi – Manasseh – An expanding tribe is like a corporation and needs a savvy business mind to effectively reach them

·       James son of Alpheus – Ephraim and Benjamin – One has to be laid back in order to deal egos that fell on both sides of this wide spectrum

·       Judah/Thaddeus/Lebbaeus – Gad and Dan -  A passionate man to reach passionate tribes

·       Simon the Zealot of Canaan – Simeon and Asher – The Zealot to reach Simeon and sometimes opposites attract and one can learn from the other is the way upper crust Asher is humbled and reached

·       Matthias – Reuben and Naphtali – It takes a humble yet firm and accepting person to reach stubborn and erratic Reuben as well as to reach “were beautiful and we know it” Naphtali

·       Saul/Paul – Gentiles 70 Nations and Assimilated 12 Tribes – Well educated and flexible enough to reach everyone

So we see amazingly the Apostolic personalities fit the Tribes.

We know Yeshua had 12 Talmidim (Disciples/Apostles) but out of the 12 He had an Inner Circle of Three; Peter, James and John the sons of Zebedee. Could these Three of Yeshua’s Inner Circle have any meaning regarding the Tribes they were to reach?

What does Peter and Judah, James and Zebulun and John, Dan and Reuben all have in common or make some sort of whole?

Judah is the principle and ruling tribe that all the others tribes are to acknowledge and be subservient to. Dan, like Aaron to Moses would help Judah rule, Zebulun always abroad represents Judah sending out ambassadors to the Gentiles and Reuben who lost the elite family position due to his sin and rebellion represents the unstable, stiff-necked people of the Kingdom that must learn submission before the Gentiles Zebulun will bring back, comes.

Yeshua had many more than just the 12 Disciples as and Luke 6:17, 10:1 and John 4:1, 6:66 bears out. When he appointed the 12, he had to have more than 12 so as to hand pick from. From the verses cited above He at least had over 70 Disciples and perhaps this may symbolize the Gentile followers of Yeshua who assist the 12 in reaching and bringing back all of the Tribes to reunite with Judah. After all, in like manner the Rabbis believe that God told Moses to choose 70 elders to represent the 70 Gentile Nations. Thus Yeshua having 70 Disciples besides the 12!

12 Apostles to Rule 12 Tribes

In James 1:1, the letter is addressed, “to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad…” which would seem to indicate that the whereabouts of the 10 Tribes of Israel were known to the Apostles of the time. But can we possibly determine if a particular Apostle was sent to a particular Tribe?

Yeshua’s command to His Apostles before He ascended into heaven said, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matt. 28:19-20).” Coupled with the other verses above would hint that the Apostles were to go to the nations where the Lost Tribes have settled.

If any of the Tribes whereabouts became unknown, it was prophesied that God would send out (Apostle) those to fish and hunt for them among the nations of the world.

“Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the Lord, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.” Jer. 16:16

Let us look at the 12 Tribes and 12 Apostles to help us better understand which Apostle ministered to which Tribe.

*13 in Hebraic numerology means “Life”

Do these facts have anything to do with which Tribes the Twelve Apostles were sent? Do these facts have anything to do with the 70 Elders, 70 Disciples and 70 Nations?

Let us focus for now on the meaning 12:

Recall, Yeshua did not call or send out the Disciples/Apostles to Gentile nations or peoples. He made clear that His and His Disciples/Apostles focus was to be to the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel.

“I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” – Matt. 15:24

“…Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” – Matt. 10:6

Rav Sha’ul (Apostle Paul) was considered the Apostle to the Gentiles (70 Nations) and confirmed that Israel should be attempted to be reached first and then the Gentile (Rom. 1:16, 2:9-10).

Why go to Lost Israel first? Because there were two Kingdoms and two Captivities. Judah, the Southern Kingdom was taken off in to Babylon and returned. Yeshua and His Disciples were apart of and constantly among them (Judah) and thus the reason Yeshua has only targeted the “Lost Sheep of the House of Israel.” The Northern Kingdom consisting of 10 Tribes of Israel was taken into Assyrian Captivity and has never returned, they never came back into the Land and thus the reason the Apostle were sent out to the Lost Tribes. 

If one will care to notice the 12 Tribes represent being gathered together. The 12 Apostles represents being sent out. Thus the Apostles are SENT to REGATHER the 12 Tribes.

Israel ENTERED the Land of Promise and is honored in the New Jerusalem by the 12 Gates according to their encampment around the Tabernacle in the wilderness. The word Apostle, means, “One who is sent,” and is honored by the Foundation Stones of the New Jerusalem. In order to see the layered foundation one must “go out” of the city in order to view them.

That being said, it seems logical Yeshua would pick 12 Apostles and assign one to each Lost Tribe.

Recall what Yeshua said regarding His Talmidim (Disciples):

And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. – Matt. 19:28

That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. – Luke 22:30
