The Danger of Afro-Centricity among Ndi Igbo

The Danger of Afro-Centricity among Ndi Igbo
Rabbi Yehudah “Tochukwu” ben Shomeyr

Before the white man, explorer, slave trader or missionary came to the West African shores Ndi Igbo has never questioned their origins or heritage. Former slave Oaudah Equiano in his biography expounded on this fact as he gives detailed account of Igbo culture prior to the coming of the white men and how it relates to that of the Children of Israel. The explorers and slave traders, even in their limited knowledge of Scripture could clearly see by their initial contact with the Igbo, that they mirrored the life of Israel in the Wilderness. It was clear to Anglican Missionary, G.T. Basden and his ministerial associates that the Igbo were likely a lost tribe of Israel and it was best to keep this knowledge under their hats so as to better convert and assimilate the Igbo into Christianity. They felt is they confirmed their Hebraic identity to them that they may lose them to Judaism. And so the introduction of forbidden foods and false claims that their GOD and their ancestors were pagan deities slowly began to turn the Igbo away from their Hebraic culture to a westernized Christian one.

In many volumes produced by Igbo-Hebrew scholars, as well as other researchers; such works as:

·        Finding Gad: The Quest for the Lost Tribe of Gad – Rabbi Yehudah “Tochukwu” ben Shomeyr
·        Omenana: As in Israel, So in Igboland – Rabbi Yehudah “Tochukwu” ben Shomeyr
·        Our Roots: Igbo Israel Heritage – Caliben I.O. Michael
·        Ibo Exodus – Prof. O. Alaezi
·        The Igbos: Jews in Africa – Remy Ilona
·        The Igbo and Israel – Remy Ilona
·        Igbo Jews and the Kingdom of God – Evang. David A. Iheanacho
·        Igbo History – Victor M.C. Eyisi
·        Biblical Evidence: Confirming the Hebrew Origins of the Igbo People – Uchechukwu Ikeanyibe
·        The Quest for the Origins of the Igbo People - Uchechukwu Ikeanyibe
·        The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano – Olaudah Equiano
·        Hebrewism of West Africa – Joseph J. Williams
·        From Babylon to Timbuktu – Rudolph R. Windsor

It has been well established in these books the various evidences such as; Biblical, Historical, Archeological, Cultural, Scientific and Linguistic evidence connecting the Igbo Tribe of Nigeria to Gad as well as other of the 12 Tribes of Israel.

However, in recent years there have come pseudo-scholars, even among the black, afro-centric community, desiring to do no less than what the white explorers, slave traders and missionaries have done; to deny and hide the true Identity of Ndi Igbo and bring them back under the paganism that caused them to be expelled from the land by the white men in the first place (Deut. 28).  Ironically under the guise enlightenment through educational institutions built from the foundations of colonialism that they cry out so much against, they themselves, and causing those they teach, to buy into the racial prejudice and falsehood that all Jews are white and have a colonial mindset and agenda to mentally and spiritual subjugate the Igbo people. Afro-centric pseudo scholars’ attempts to further expand the abyss of the racial divide between whites and blacks as well as bring the Igbo and other African peoples spiritually and mentally back under the dark ages of paganism in some sort of imaginary, diluted, repackaged, post-modern, neo-pagan, Afro-centric golden age that never existed, nor ever will exist.

Afro-Centricity also endangers not only the Igbo but all the unique African tribes and peoples, which in reality, their uniqueness and diversity is a beauty and a strength, but is seen as wedges and divides. Ironically this comes from the colonial western mindset. Who wants to live in a cookie-cutter world? Who wants to live in a world where all rainbows are simply different shades of grey? Why can we not have unity and still be uniquely who we were created and called to be? It is possible. Focus on the commonalities while appreciating the differences while at the same time on points of disagreement; disagree, agreeably in brotherly love.

I loved watching those boring filmstrips in Social Studies and History class. I like watching the History, Discovery, and the Travel Channel today. I love to discover and experience new cultures and new things. In college I enjoyed being involved in being paired up with students from other countries; I loved picking the brains of MK’s (Missionary Kids).

The events that occurred at the Tower of Babel gave us our diverse cultures, people groups and languages, all of which are unfortunately rapidly disappearing. At Babel, so today, man desire is to unite the peoples of the world in a self-absorbed, materialistic, hedonistic society.

What a sad time to be an anthropologist, for diversity in culture is fast becoming an endangered species of sorts. The world is more becoming “westernized”. In the late 60’s and early 70’s one could visit any given country and still see people in their traditional dress, you could still see people wearing wooden shoes in Holland.

I recently seen a report on CBS about how the traditional dress of the Japanese woman is almost a relic of the past, only being worn at weddings and special events. How Japanese women actually have to enroll in a class that teaches how one properly puts on a wears the regalia of the Japanese woman.

With the advent of the internet global culture is becoming less diverse. From third world countries, to the Orient, to even the Middle East, T-shirts, blue jeans and tennis shoes are fast becoming the norm. No more robes and dashikis, they are fast becoming fossils, museum pieces. With westernization today’s youth of the world is losing the richness of their culture in language, dress, customs, etc. All of which is steathfully geared to condition the peoples of the earth to accept a Babel-like one world government.

I’m all for peace, unity and tolerance, but not at the cost of assimilation of a people and their unique culture.

It’s a shame that the Native American culture and ways are quickly dying along with the revered elders and only sepia tone photos from the 1800’s remain; a classic case of assimilation. We all know what happened in WWII when Hitler wanted everyone to think like him and live like him and look like him and believe like him. The Persian King Cyrus had the right idea. Though he conquered many peoples he allowed them to keep their cultural uniqueness and religion.

God loves diversity; just look how diverse the whole of creation is.

Who Has the Right to Rebuke Me?

Who Has the Right to Rebuke Me?
Rabbi Yehudah ben Shomeyr

Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. – Matt.18:15-20

When an issue comes before me twice or more in short period of time I take this as a sign that HaShem wishes for me to address the issue. I was asked recently about believers rebuking other believers and then I myself was rebuked by a total stranger!

Taking our cue from the passage above; one may reprove one in sin, but there is a protocol. The implication is that those reproving must know you well enough to have a relationship with you and they must know fully your situation. Also they must be in and well known and trusted in your physical and or cyber community. What they are reproving another of must be backed by Scripture and the Scripture must be given in context. If this criteria is met the reproof must be (and I emphasis) done in love and in private and the one reproving must be right with God themselves. If all is in order and if they that are being reproved will not listen, then 2 or 3 others believers should brought in on the matter as witnesses and encouragers of repentance and if the offending party will not listen after that they need to be brought in private before authoritative elders which implies those reproving and the reproved must be part of the same community, synagogue or organization and have appointed, agreed upon and known and trusted elders in order to render a decision and verdict. If after this the person being reproved will not repent one then must cut ties with them all together.

So beware of stern, unloving or deceptively unloving self-appointed, self-righteous judgers of other peoples spirituality who do not know you personally and yet claim to be some authoritative figure in your life, those who say they have a, "Word of Yah" for you, or that "Yah revealed" something to them about you. If they truly did have a “word”; 1. The Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) would have either revealed it to you first or confirmed the revelation in your spirit upon hearing it. 2. It would have been backed up by Scripture.

Example: After blocking someone online who sent me a “nastygram,” I was contacted again by the person through another profile and was given a fiery and stinging rebuked by a total stranger. I never meet them or had any type of relationship with them and they were rebuking me not over doctrinal issues, but over Halacha, the way I choose fulfill certain commandments that has nothing to do with ones salvation. This was my reply;

“This is the first and last correspondence that I will have with you.

You are blocked because: I "Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels." (II Tim. 2:23)

I have much better things to do with my time than to waste it arguing simply because you have a different halacha than me…

Many of our disagreements are addressed my website.”

Many who feel they have the right to rebuke anyone simply because they are a, “Prophet, Apostle” or “child of God” or our “brother or sister in the LORD” but such are classic “red flag” predators who like satan are roaming lions seeking whom they may devour. Bottom line, you do not have to listen to or take any spiritual rebuke from someone you do not know and or trust and who is not a part of your spiritual community and especially if you have not willing put yourself under their authority.

My Army of 300

My Army of 300

Thinking about and preparing for this mission trip to Igbos in Germany, London and Ireland, the LORD has put Gideon in my head and heart.

You know, my life and ministry has been a lot like that of Gideon and his army.

Here I am, a nobody among millions, minding my own business and working quietly and quite timidly outside of the spotlight in my own little hovel and Yeshua (Angel of the LORD) says to me, “The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour (Judg. 6:12).” Like a person wanting to know if they are hallucinating, I ask for signs and they are given to me. Then the LORD reassures, “I will be with thee… (Judg. 6:16).”

I started out as a Free Will Baptist Christian with thousands behind me; I fit about as good as a square peg in a round hole. I then become a Messianic Jew with thousands behind me and the LORD tells me, “The people that are with thee are too many… lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me (Judg. 7:2).”

Then I find myself a Natsari Hebrew and the LORD says once again to me, “The people are yet too many (Judg. 7:4).” So I separate myself from the “Red Flag” Natsarim and now I am left with a remnant, with only hundreds behind me.

Then I find my past summer job opportunities I used to help fund my mission trips unavailable, thus more support cut off and the LORD says to me, “By the three hundred… will I save you… (Judg. 7:7).”

Most Christian denominations will not support me because I keep the Torah and will not be influenced by bribery to compromise my stance, beliefs and or practices just to be some ones poster child or token Jew.

Many Messianic sects will not support for similar reasons.

Donations from denominational organizations usually come with strings.

“That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich.” – Gen. 14:23

I have stripped and sacrificed all the best I know how for uncompromising purity and truth, despite the seeming “disadvantages” to myself.

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. – Psa. 20:7

I choose to believe in the Word of the LORD, “By the three hundred men… will I save you… (Judg. 7:7).”

I said at the start of 2013 that I believe this was our year. Can I get 300 recruits!? If but 300 people would donate $13.33 each, I would have $3,999.00, just one dollar shy of my goal for this European mission trip to the Igbos there.

I need approximately:
·        $3000 for airfare and related travel expenses
·        $500 for travelers insurance
·        $500 in emergency funds

While in Germany, London and Ireland my accommodations will be taken care of by my respective hosts.  Any funds that exceed my current needs I will put towards my next mission trip.

Donations can be made through paypal at my website: http://www.abrahamsdescendants.com/missions-trip-fundraiser.html

Or one can send a check or money order to:
